The requirements to get married in France
Weddings taking place in the Mairie (Townhall) and performed by the Mayor of the town are internationally recognized and legally binding. It is possible for foreign couples to get married in France. However, there’s a residency requirement of a 40-day minimum on French territory, prior to the civil wedding. Read more about it on the French government website.
If you cannot meet these legal conditions to have your Destination Wedding in France, we won’t give up on you! For instance, most of our foreign couples have their legal civil ceremony at home before (or after). Afterward, they have a symbolic Wedding in France or a Paris Elopement.

A symbolic wedding is a meaningful, non-legally binding ceremony. In fact, it offers you more flexibility to plan your perfect tailor-made wedding (and have even more beautiful wedding pictures!).
To illustrate, our couple had a multicultural destination wedding in Paris. They combined a traditional Chinese tea ceremony with a bespoke ceremony celebrated by an officiant at The Ritz. Moreover, you could also choose to exchange your vows intimately with just the two of you. Most importantly, this focuses on the most important thing: you and your experience. Having two artists instead of one for your wedding will provide a more complete story. We’re not breaking the news about that, are we?
If you have more than 100 guests at your wedding, we suggest having 2 photographers and/or videographers. Or if your timeline is very intense. This will offer you more flexibility and possibilities for a better wedding coverage.

There are a lot of vendors that you should get in touch with to organize the perfect wedding. Here are a few tips to find the right vendors for your destination wedding:
Paris Wedding planner
Especially if you are organizing your wedding in France from abroad! We’d highly recommend you hire a Paris wedding planner. An experienced planner knows where to start, who to contact, and what to do. Pro tip: you can usually ask for a call to discuss your ideas and see if it’s a match ;).
Officiant
Also known as the celebrant, the officiant is the person who celebrates your wedding ceremony. Always contact them beforehand to check what’s included in their ceremony packages. Check also the languages they speak (some Paris officiants do speak English, French, and German!). Thus, ask if they are able to deliver a bespoke ceremony for a multicultural wedding.
Floral design and decoration
There are many options for wedding floral design such as boho, opulence, elegant, chic… Get in touch with the florist to discuss the style and size of your decoration. At the same time, see what they can do for your chosen wedding location. We do want to point out that flowers can cost a lot. You’ll have to attribute a consequent budget to it if you want a big and sumptuous decor. But hey, that’s your wedding so don’t you think you should make it fabulous?
Wedding dress
There are so many different types of wedding dresses that can fit your body shape and style. Many of our soon-to-be brides ask if they should buy or rent their dress : it is very up to you ! Keep in mind that Paris is the city of fashion where you will have no troubles finding highly talented designers. Plus, you won’t have to carry a gown in the plane ?. Plan at least 6 months to be safe if you’re thinking about a made-to-order dress. No worries, we can also advise you on last minute options if you’re thinking about an elopement.
Make-up and hair
You might need the help of a professional make-up artist (MUA) to create your dream wedding look. Are you more into glamorous & glowy? natural? full-on glitters? Ask for a make-up trial or a mood board. This can give you an idea of what fits you & your wedding dress best. Some MUAs are also hairstylists and do light make-up and hair for grooms, definitely check with them! Otherwise, you can also require the separate services of a hairstylist and/or barber.
Stationery
Your guests will probably love receiving a bespoke paper invitation, especially now that everything has become digitalized. Ask the designer for a mood board and a few mock-ups or samples. Remember to keep one or two for your Paris wedding photographer to do some details shots!
Catering, wine and wedding cake
France is probably one of the best places in the world to have a delicious tasting of your wedding menu. Organize a tasting with an experienced French chef or caterer. Don’t forget to ask for the greatest wine and Champagne suggestions depending on your budget. You can also hire a French pâtissier (pastry chef) to bake your dream wedding cake.
Extras
If you feel like adding a little extra for your Paris wedding, you can also rent a vintage car. Usually the car is with 2-3 seats max for the couple and the driver. It could even be a luxury car such as a Mercedes or a Rolls Royce. This will be more convenient to commute between the locations if you’re doing photos in various spots around the city. Who wouldn’t love to travel in style?
